Early Life and Education

Alice Lindsay Price was born on June 1, 1880, in Wheeling, West Virginia. From a young age, she displayed a keen intellect and a deep desire to pursue her education. Despite financial challenges, Price enrolled at the West Virginia State Normal School (now West Virginia University) in 1900, where she excelled in her studies. After graduating in 1903, she taught school for several years while continuing her education through summer courses.

A Trailblazing Educator

Price's passion for education extended beyond the classroom. In 1909, she became the principal of Bluefield Colored School, the only African American high school in Mercer County, West Virginia. Under her leadership, the school experienced significant growth and became a hub for academic excellence. Price introduced innovative teaching methods, established a library, and initiated a parent-teacher association, fostering a love of learning among her students.

Pioneering Nurse and Social Worker

Recognizing the lack of healthcare services for African American communities, Price turned her attention to nursing. In 1915, she earned a diploma in nursing from Provident Hospital in Chicago, becoming one of the first African American nurses in West Virginia. She established a private nursing practice and became an active member of the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses.

Simultaneously, Price pursued social work, advocating for the well-being of marginalized populations. She worked at the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA in Cleveland, Ohio, and later became the first African American social worker for the American Red Cross in West Virginia. Price's tireless efforts in these fields brought much-needed support and resources to communities that had been historically underserved.

Establishing the Alice Lindsay Price Memorial Fund

In 1935, Price established the Alice Lindsay Price Memorial Fund, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting health, education, and social welfare among African Americans. Through the fund, she provided scholarships to deserving students and supported various social programs. The fund has continued its mission long after Price's passing, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Legacy and Recognition

Alice Lindsay Price passed away on June 25, 1952, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy. Her groundbreaking work as an educator, nurse, and social worker earned her numerous accolades and recognition. In 1941, she was awarded the Julius Rosenwald Fellowship, becoming the first African American woman to receive this prestigious honor. Additionally, she was inducted into the West Virginia University Hall of Fame and recognized by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for her outstanding contributions.

The life of Alice Lindsay Price is a testament to the transformative power of one determined individual. From her humble beginnings to her pioneering achievements, she blazed a trail for future generations. As an educator, nurse, and social worker, she tirelessly advocated for the well-being of others, leaving an enduring mark on the communities she served. Her legacy continues to inspire and empower those who strive to make a meaningful difference in the world.
