Ian Tyson was born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1933. Sylvia Tyson (née Fricker) was born in Chatham, Ontario, in 1940. The two met in Toronto in 1959, and they soon began performing together. They released their first album, Ian & Sylvia, in 1962.

Ian and Sylvia's early music was heavily influenced by traditional folk music. They often performed songs byWoody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and other folk icons. However, they also began writing their own songs, and they quickly developed a distinctive sound. Their songs were often about the Canadian experience, and they featured beautiful harmonies and intricate guitar work.
