In the autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people came together to celebrate the first Thanksgiving. This historic event has been celebrated in the United States for centuries, but the story has often been told from the perspective of the Pilgrims. Hobomok and Thanksgiving by Rebekka Parry tells the story of the first Thanksgiving from the perspective of a Wampanoag woman.
The novel follows the story of Squanto, a young Wampanoag man who was kidnapped by English explorers and sold into slavery in Spain. Squanto eventually escaped and made his way back to his homeland, where he helped the Pilgrims survive their first winter in the New World. Hobomok and Thanksgiving tells the story of Squanto's life and his role in the first Thanksgiving from the perspective of his wife, Patuxet.
Parry's novel is based on extensive research and brings to life the rich culture and history of the Wampanoag people. The novel is full of vivid descriptions of Wampanoag life, from their homes and clothing to their food and customs. Parry also does a great job of capturing the complex relationship between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people. The novel shows that the relationship was not always easy, but that there was also a great deal of respect and cooperation between the two groups.
Hobomok and Thanksgiving is a beautiful and moving novel that tells the story of the first Thanksgiving in a new and unique way. The novel is a must-read for anyone who is interested in American history, Native American culture, or the story of Thanksgiving.
