Plot Summary
The play is set in the canton of Uri, Switzerland, in the 14th century. The Swiss people are under the oppressive rule of the Austrian bailiffs. Wilhelm Tell, a skilled archer and crossbowman, becomes a symbol of resistance against the Austrians.
After Tell refuses to bow to the Austrian governor, Gessler, he is arrested and sentenced to death. However, Tell is able to escape and, with the help of his fellow countrymen, leads a revolt against the Austrians.
