Sample Chapter: The Birth of the Battleship

The first battleships were developed in the mid-19th century, as a response to the increasing power of naval artillery. The first ironclad warship, the French Gloire, was launched in 1859. The Gloire was a wooden-hulled ship that was protected by iron plates. It was armed with 36 guns, and it could steam at a speed of 13 knots.

The Gloire was followed by a series of other ironclad warships, including the British HMS Warrior and the American USS Monitor. These ships were all heavily armored, and they were armed with powerful guns. They were also much faster than the wooden-hulled ships of the line that they replaced.

The ironclad warship quickly became the dominant warship in the world. They were used in a number of major naval battles, including the Battle of Hampton Roads and the Battle of Lissa. By the end of the 19th century, all of the major navies in the world had adopted ironclad warships.
