About the Author
The Flying Tigers were a group of American volunteer pilots who fought against the Japanese in World War II. They were officially known as the American Volunteer Group (AVG),but they were nicknamed the Flying Tigers because of their distinctive shark-tooth nose art.
The AVG was formed in 1941 by Claire Chennault, a retired US Army Air Corps officer. Chennault had been living in China for several years, and he was convinced that the Chinese could not defeat the Japanese without air support.
Chennault recruited a group of experienced American pilots to join the AVG. These pilots came from all walks of life, but they all shared a common love of flying and a desire to fight for freedom.
The AVG arrived in China in 1942, and they immediately began flying combat missions against the Japanese. The Flying Tigers were outnumbered and outgunned, but they quickly proved to be a formidable opponent.
The Flying Tigers flew over 3,000 combat missions during their time in China. They destroyed over 1,000 Japanese aircraft and sank dozens of ships. They also provided close air support for Chinese ground troops and helped to evacuate civilians from war zones.
The Flying Tigers were disbanded in 1943, but their legacy lives on. They are remembered as one of the most courageous and effective fighting units in World War II.
